At the core of gridFACER™ is facial recognition biometrics system which is a method of identifying a person using a unique facial characteristic. Biometrics are most often used as a replacement for common security features that can be lost, forgotten, or stolen. Biometrics have gained more recognition lately due to the alarming increase in both identity theft and the ability to fabricate fraudulent identification documents.

Biometrics is the actual science of measuring physical characteristics, but there are many different modalities of biometrics. Some of these include fingerprints, iris recognition, hand geometry, vessel identification, and vein patterns. Each modality has its strengths and weaknesses.
